What Is a Nut Forming Die?
A nut forming die is a precision tooling component used in cold heading (cold forging, cold forming) machines to shape raw wire into finished nut profiles. The die forms the internal cavity that defines the outer shape of the nut.
In a typical cold heading process, the wire blank is fed into the former, and the nut forming die — working in conjunction with the punch — applies high compressive force to plastically deform the material into the desired nut geometry. The result is a near-net-shape part with excellent dimensional accuracy and surface finish.
Types of Nut Forming Dies

Materials: Carbide and H13 Steel
The two most common materials for nut forming dies are tungsten carbide and H13 tool steel. Choosing the right material depends on your production volume, nut material, and budget.
Tungsten Carbide Nut Forming Dies
- Hardness: HRA 81–92 (extremely hard and wear-resistant)
- Service life: 5–10× longer than H13 steel dies
- Best for: High-volume production (1 million+ pieces), stainless steel or hard alloy nuts
- Advantage: Lower cost-per-piece over the die's lifetime
- Consideration: Higher upfront tooling cost; more brittle than steel
H13 Tool Steel Dies Shell
- Service life: much better than the #40 steel
- Advantage: use good H13 material, the life of the mold shell can reach years, same machine for different products, can only change the carbide insert, in this way, the cost will be much lower.
